Rassel and Shamima, the Evaly Executives Earn Five-Year Jail for Fraud
A Dhaka court has sentenced Evaly’s Managing Director Mohammad Rassel and Chairperson Shamima Nasrin to five years in prison in a fraud case filed by a defrauded customer named Sadiqur Rahman.
On Wednesday, November 12, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Zakir Hossain delivered the verdict in absentia, as the accused were not present in court during the ruling.
Court Bench Assistant Md Nazmul Islam Talukder said that along with the imprisonment, both convicts were fined ten thousand taka each. “In default of payment, they will have to serve an additional three months in jail,” he added. Since the convicts were absent during the verdict announcement, the court also issued arrest warrants against them.
According to the case statement, the accused lured customers with flashy advertisements designed to deceive. Evaly, through its Facebook page, offered various promotional deals on different products. Tempted by such offers, the plaintiff, Sadiqur Rahman, ordered three motorcycles on March 20, 2021. However, the company failed to deliver the motorcycles within the stipulated time. Later, two cheques from The City Bank were issued to him as repayment, but both bounced when he attempted to encash them on April 12, 2022. Following this, Sadiqur Rahman filed the fraud case on November 26, 2023.
