Rajshahi: To address the long-standing problem of iron-contaminated water, Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) has, for the first time, launched a modern Reverse Osmosis (RO) water treatment plant.

The plant was experimentally introduced on Monday, 30 March, across four residential halls of the university.

According to university sources, installation work has been completed on the rooftops of the newly constructed Student Hall-1, Student Hall-2, Nawab Faizunnesa Chowdhurani Hall (Female Hall-1), and Female Hall-2. The project was implemented by the university’s Planning and Development Department at a cost of approximately Tk 3 million.

Dr. H. M. Russell, Director of the Planning and Development Department and supervisor of the project, said that under the directive of Vice-Chancellor Dr. S M Abdur Razzak, the plant has initially been launched in four halls. He expressed optimism that it would play an effective role in addressing the iron-rich water problem prevalent in the Rajshahi region. There are also plans to expand the project further in the future.

Due to the high iron content in underground water in the Rajshahi region, students had long been suffering from a lack of safe drinking water. In this context, the installation of these plants by the university administration is expected to ensure safe and hygienic drinking water for students.

Reverse Osmosis is a modern water purification method in which harmful substances, excess salts, and iron are removed through a specialized membrane, making the water suitable for consumption.

Students have described the initiative as timely, stating that it will provide a long-term solution to water quality issues. They also expressed hope that the facility would soon be expanded to other halls and academic buildings.

Concerned stakeholders believe that this initiative to ensure a safe water supply will serve as a significant milestone in improving the quality of life on the RUET campus.
