A fire broke out at an abandoned warehouse of Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) in Sylhet on Wednesday, November 12, around 6:30 pm.

Upon receiving the report, three units of the Fire Service rushed to the scene and brought the flames under control within half an hour.

Mohammad Kutub Uddin, Senior Station Officer of the Talatala Fire Service in Sylhet, said, “It was a mere accident. No sign of sabotage was found in the initial investigation. We primarily assume that the fire originated from an electrical short circuit.”

According to local sources, smoke was suddenly seen rising from the warehouse in the evening, causing panic among nearby residents. A team from the Sylhet Fire Service quickly arrived at the spot and managed to contain the fire, preventing major damage.

Confirming the incident, Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, Saiful Islam, said, “The fire started from sparks while welding barbed wire on the boundary wall of the Bangladesh Bank adjacent to the BTCL building. However, the quick response of the Fire Service brought the situation under control. No casualties were reported, and no major losses occurred.”

Later, BTCL Deputy General Manager Mihir Roy said, “It is assumed that the fire originated from a short circuit. The estimated loss amounts to around two lakh taka. The matter will be investigated further.”

Officer-in-Charge of Sylhet Kotwali Model Police Station, Khondaker Mostafizur Rahman, added, “Police visited the spot after receiving the news. It has been confirmed that the fire was caused by an accident.”
