Meta Merges with PlayAI to Power Voice Cloning Capabilities

Meta has finalized a deal to acquire California-based AI voice cloning startup PlayAI, according to a report by Bloomberg, as cited by Engadget.
Under the terms of the agreement, the entire PlayAI team is set to join Meta next week, where they will work under the leadership of Johan Schalkwijk. Schalkwijk previously led Google’s Speech AI division.
PlayAI’s technology enables the cloning of user voices and the generation of entirely new, human-like voices, which can be used across apps, websites, and telephony services. Meta stated that this technology “perfectly aligns with our roadmap for Meta AI, AI characters, and wearable products.”
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is personally overseeing the creation of a new AI superintelligence lab at Meta. As part of this broader strategy, Meta has recently invested $14.3 billion in Scale AI and brought on board several top AI experts from competing firms.
