- RUET has expelled 12 students for two academic years over alleged exam misconduct
- Examinations for four student batches have been cancelled
- Confiscated phones and calculators will be returned after completion of academic programmes
Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) has expelled 12 students from various departments for two academic years over allegations of examination misconduct. The university administration has also cancelled the relevant examinations of the students concerned. The decision was taken to uphold examination integrity and academic discipline.
The disciplinary action was unanimously approved at a meeting of the university’s Board of Discipline, chaired by the vice-chancellor, at the administrative building’s conference room on Tuesday morning, October 13.
According to university administration sources, the expelled students include two from the 21 series, three from the 22 series, four from the 24 series and three from the 25 series.
Of the two students from the 21 series, one belongs to the Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering (ETE) department and the other to the Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) department.
Among the three students from the 22 series, two are from the Civil Engineering department and one from the Mechanical Engineering department. The four students from the 24 series include three from Civil Engineering and one from Mechatronics. The three students from the 25 series represent Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), and Industrial and Production Engineering (IPE), with one student from each department.
Under the decision, the fourth-year odd-semester examinations of students from the 21 series, the third-year odd-semester examinations of those from the 22 series, the first-year backlog examinations of students from the 24 series, and the first-year odd-semester examinations of those from the 25 series have been cancelled.
The university administration said the affected students would be eligible to participate in examinations again through readmission after their expulsion periods end.
The administration has also decided how to handle electronic devices and other items seized from examination halls. Mobile phones and calculators confiscated from the penalized students will remain in university custody and will be returned after the students complete their academic programmes.
Professor Dr Mohammad Robiul Islam Sarkar, secretary of RUET’s Disciplinary Committee and director of student welfare, said the university administration maintained a strict stance against examination misconduct. He stressed that, alongside academic knowledge, students must develop honesty and moral values.
He added that RUET had already increased the opportunities to sit for backlog and short-semester examinations to as many as five times. He described continued examination malpractice despite these opportunities as highly concerning.
