CUET Students March Blindfolded in Protest
- CUET students marched blindfolded to protest the administration’s inaction
- The protest entered its ninth day demanding Sayem’s reinstatement as vice-chancellor
- Students said the administration has yet to respond effectively
Students at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) marched with black cloth tied over their eyes on Wednesday to protest what they described as the administration’s failure to take effective steps to resolve the ongoing crisis. The march was part of the ninth day of their movement demanding the reinstatement of Professor Dr Abu Sadat Mohammad Mohammad Sayem as the university’s vice-chancellor.
The march began at around 2:45pm on Wednesday (September 30) from the university’s Central Shaheed Minar premises. Protesters took part with black cloth tied over their eyes.
The students said the black cloth symbolised what they described as the administration’s silence over the ongoing situation.
The procession moved along the road beside the university medical centre, passed through Swadhinata Chattar and returned to the Central Shaheed Minar premises.
During the march, students chanted slogans including, “Why is the administration silent? We want answers,” “Vice-Chancellor Sir, Sayem Sir,” and “We have only one demand, we want Sayem Sir as vice-chancellor.”
Ejaz Mahmud Khan, a fourth-year student of the Department of Civil Engineering who took part in the march, said, “We have been carrying out a peaceful movement at CUET for nearly nine days. But with great disappointment, we are seeing that there has still been no response from the administration and no effective steps have been taken. We tied black cloth over our eyes this afternoon to protest this silence.”
