Maldivian Airlines, the national carrier of the Maldives, has inaugurated its Dhaka city office and announced the resumption of direct Dhaka-Male-Dhaka flights starting March 12.
The official inauguration took place on Monday, February 23, at the Taj Marriott building on Gulshan Avenue, officiated by Maldivian Managing Director M. Ibrahim Yas.
Present at the ceremony were Ground Operations Director Ahmed Ibrahim, General Manager (International Commercial) Mohamed Safah, and Ahmed Yusuf Walid, President and CEO of Galaxy Bangladesh Group, the General Sales Agent (GSA) for Maldivian Airlines in Bangladesh.
During the inauguration, Ibrahim Yas stated that the resumption of this route reflects the airline’s commitment to serving the large Bangladeshi expatriate community in the Maldives and will strengthen bilateral connectivity.
He said, “Dhaka is an important market for Maldivian Airlines. Relaunching this route demonstrates our commitment to ensuring reliable, affordable, and convenient travel for Bangladeshi workers and travelers to the Maldives. We believe this service will deepen the long-standing relations between our countries.”
Following the inauguration, the Maldivian delegation held courtesy meetings with the Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh and the Managing Director & CEO of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
Initially, the flight will operate twice a week on Sundays and Thursdays, with return fares starting at USD 399 (approximately Tk 47,880). Flights will arrive in Dhaka early in the morning to facilitate easy connections to international destinations.
The Maldivian authorities indicated that the route has been resumed in response to the demand from Bangladeshi workers in the Maldives. The service is timed to accommodate increased passenger movement during the end of Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr, benefiting both Maldivian travelers going abroad and returning Bangladeshi citizens.
Passengers will enjoy 30 kg baggage allowance and complimentary onboard meals. Tickets are available via the airline’s official website, mobile app, and call center (1671).
To celebrate the route relaunch, the airline has announced a music festival titled “Dhaka, We Heard You,” scheduled for Friday, aimed at the Bangladeshi community residing in the Maldives.
Dhaka is a popular destination for Maldivian and Bangladeshi citizens for business, short-term travel, and as a regional transit hub. Airline officials noted that this cultural initiative symbolizes enduring friendship and mutual relations between the peoples of Bangladesh and the Maldives.
Currently, Maldivian Airlines’ fleet consists of 26 aircraft—including one wide-body Airbus A330, one narrow-body Airbus A320, five ATRs, eight Dash 8s, and eleven Dash 6 Twin Otters—operating domestic and international routes.
