Addressing the escalating complexities of algorithmic data flows, deep synthesis technologies, and machine learning risks, Bangladesh has called for unified international governance to combat pervasive disinformation and unethical artificial intelligence (AI) practices. State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasir Khan Chowdhury articulated this strategic imperative on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, delivering his address as a special guest at a symposium hosted at the Information Commission Auditorium to observe International Right to Information Day 2026. Aligned with the technical theme 'Ensuring Accurate Information in the Digital Age: Role of RTI in Countering Disinformation', the assembly critically examined the intersection of verified public data, cyber trust, and information integrity.
According to institutional sources, the State Minister emphasized that while the modern digital landscape boasts an unprecedented volume of data, the viral spread of unverified claims and algorithmic manipulation poses systemic risks. He noted that ensuring legal transparency must run parallel with systematic technical fact-verification and responsible transmission. Misinformation inflicts measurable damage not only on individuals, but across structural democratic institutions, civil society, and familial security, demanding acute accountability from digital content creators, media practitioners, and political leadership alike.
Focusing on generative digital risks, Yasir Khan Chowdhury cautioned digital consumers against uncritical engagement, liking, or redistributing synthetic content across social platforms without antecedent authentication. He sharply condemned malicious deployments of emerging technologies—particularly synthetic identity fraud and unauthorized generative AI manipulation designed to defame citizens and distort public perception. The State Minister warned that failure to deploy decisive preventative frameworks immediately would compromise global digital networks, demanding institutional coordination among international partners.
Chaired by Information and Broadcasting Secretary Mahbuba Farjana, the plenary featured Prime Minister's Information and Broadcasting Affairs Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman as a special guest. The keynote scientific evaluation was delivered by Professor Sumon Rahman, Head of the Department of Media Studies and Journalism at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh. Prominent civic voice and SHUJAN Secretary Badiul Alam Majumdar joined the deliberations virtually, alongside National Press Club President Hasan Hafiz, Information Commission Secretary Md Shah Alam, and various institutional heads.
