Students Demand Vice-Chancellor’s Reinstatement
CUET Students Continue Shutdown
- Academic activities remain suspended except medical and security services
- Students hold mass signature campaign at Shaheed Minar
- Protesters vow to continue peaceful movement until demands are met
Academic and administrative activities at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) remained largely suspended for a second consecutive day as students continued their complete shutdown demanding the reinstatement of former Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem. All academic activities, except medical and security services, remain closed amid the protest.
On Wednesday, September 23, students held a mass signature campaign at the university’s Shaheed Minar premises as part of their ongoing protest and demonstration programme.
The campaign began at 11:20 am, with students participating in an orderly queue. They provided their student ID numbers and signatures. The students said the collected signatures would later be submitted to the relevant authorities.
Farhan Hasnat Adib, a third-year student of the Department of Mechanical Engineering who participated in the campaign, said, “On September 21, Professor Abu Sadat Sayem was removed from the post of Vice-Chancellor without prior notice. We held a protest procession that night in response. The following day, September 22, a complete shutdown was observed at CUET. Today, on the second day of our movement, we are holding the mass signature campaign. Our peaceful movement will continue until our demands are met.”
The shutdown remained in effect on Wednesday morning, while the university’s main gate was kept closed. Students were also seen playing cricket in front of the gate.
Earlier, on the night of September 21, students protested against the decision to remove Professor Dr. Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem as CUET Vice-Chancellor and appoint Professor Dr. Sheikh Shariful Alam of Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET) as the new Vice-Chancellor. The protesters subsequently locked the Vice-Chancellor’s residence and announced a shutdown of the university’s academic and administrative activities.
Expressing solidarity with the ongoing movement, CUET Alumni Germany, Norway and the United States, along with former CUET students living in different countries, issued statements in support of the protesters.
