Intensifying academic unrest across the premier engineering and technical landscape, the campus of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) erupted into widespread agitation in the early hours of Tuesday, September 29. Against the backdrop of escalating tension, faculty, staff, and engineering students faced alleged external intimidation and threats, prompting a major protest march originating from the university's Swadhinata Chhattar. Agitating students reiterated their demand for the immediate reinstatement of former Vice Chancellor Dr. Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem.
According to relevant sources, students began mobilizing from various residential halls at 11:30 PM on Monday, September 28, chanting slogans before converging on Swadhinata Chhattar. At 12:00 AM on September 29, the protest rally traversed the residential roundabout before returning to Swadhinata Chhattar. Agitating engineering students voiced sharp discontent, chanting "Reject, reject, online VC reject" and "One single demand, we want Sayem Sir as VC".
Sakib Hasan, a fourth-year student of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, told media professionals: "Many might assume the momentum of our movement is fading. The turnout in tonight's march stands as the definitive answer to such misconceptions."
Asadullah Hil Galib, a fourth-year student from the Department of Petroleum and Mining Engineering, issued a stern caution through media personnel: "Certain quarters are resorting to threats, intimidation, and targeting our family members to suppress this movement. We warn them that coercion will not deter us. Our democratic demand is clear: revoke the appointment notification of KUET Professor Dr. Shariful Alam and reinstate Professor Dr. Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem as CUET Vice Chancellor."
Furthermore, student sources confirmed that a complete campus shutdown and round-the-clock sit-in will commence at the CUET main entrance at 8:00 AM on Tuesday, September 29. Protest activities will feature day-long outdoor sports at the main gate, culminating in a symbolic "Mask March" scheduled for 1:30 PM, agitated students stated.
