Govt Suspends Operations of BASIS Auxiliary Committee

Amid ongoing corporate governance challenges, electoral disputes, and institutional leadership vacuums in Bangladesh's premier software trade body, the Ministry of Commerce has suspended all operations of the newly constituted auxiliary committee of the Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS). The suspension directive was issued today, Monday (28 September 2026), via an official notification (Memo No: 26.00.0000.157.33.0028.98.309) signed by Deputy Secretary Chowdhury Samia Yasmin from the Commerce Organization-2 branch.

The official order states that pursuant to BASIS Memo No: 10636/26 (dated 22/09/2026), the operational activities of the newly formed auxiliary committee have been suspended until further instruction. Copies of the directive were formally dispatched to the Additional Secretary of the Commerce Ministry (serving as the BASIS Administrator) and the BASIS Head of Service, Jannatul Ferdous.

The decision comes after a turbulent period for BASIS leadership, marked by two canceled election schedules, the resignation of the initial support committee, and a prolonged administrative impasse that led to the appointment of a government administrator from the Commerce Ministry. The auxiliary committee, formed on September 22 to assist the administrator in organizing fresh elections and maintaining daily organizational affairs, has now been rendered inactive within six days of its announcement.

This sudden suspension has re-injected severe uncertainty into the upcoming election roadmap and institutional management of the IT industry's primary trade association. General members and tech industry leaders are urging the government to resolve all administrative complexities swiftly to facilitate a transparent election and transition power to a democratically elected executive board.
