In a strategic move to modernize urban transit logistics and resolve traffic bottlenecks across the capital, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed authorities to deploy Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) systems and build a dedicated mobile application for expressways and flyovers. The decisions were finalized during a high-level coordination meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Tejgaon Office on Saturday, 29 August 2026. Relevant agencies have been instructed to deliver the automated tolling infrastructure within four months.

The review encompassed urban congestion patterns, expressway vehicle flows, terminal re-engineering, and structured multi-tier parking. To tackle chronic gridlocks around the Mayor Hanif (Jatrabari-Gulistan) Flyover, the Prime Minister directed the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) to re-evaluate their technical assessment and submit dynamic traffic management recommendations within 15 days, to be jointly executed by city corporations and traffic divisions.

To streamline bus routes and reduce heavy vehicular density in the central core, the Fulbaria bus terminal will be permanently relocated to Keraniganj. As a transition measure, a temporary terminal spanning 15 acres in the Jhilmil project will be developed over the next four months. The directive also included expanding the rear yard of the Gabtoli bus terminal and shifting the Karwan Bazar wholesale kitchen market to Gabtoli.

Additionally, authorities were instructed to assess the Osmani Memorial Auditorium and adjacent zones for designated parking, draft a regulatory framework for electric auto-rickshaws, and enforce crackdowns against unauthorized double-decker sleeper coaches.

The meeting was attended by Home Minister Salauddin Ahmed, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam, State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam, MP Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, DSCC Administrator Abdus Salam, the Cabinet Secretary, and the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister.
