Bangladesh and China have initiated talks to expand bilateral technical cooperation in civil infrastructure, modern port management, municipal waste-to-energy processing, and renewable energy systems. Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen held a high-level meeting with Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan at his secretariat office on Thursday, 27 August. State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam was also present.

Discussions focused on modernizing Dhaka's solid waste processing, urban sewerage networks, engineering pipeline expansions to achieve full operational capacity at the Dasherkandi Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), sustainable housing, curriculum integration of the Mandarin language, and renewable energy adoption. State Minister Mir Shahe Alam disclosed that an estimated BDT 10,000 crore engineering and housing investment proposal was presented to China for the redevelopment of the Korail, Gulshan, and Mohakhali informal settlements, to which China responded with initial positive interest for phased execution.

Ambassador Yao Wen congratulated the Minister on assuming his official portfolio. Minister Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan noted, "China remains a pivotal infrastructure partner. Deploying Chinese technical expertise, specialized engineering practices, and capital across water utility frameworks, waste logistics, and clean energy will accelerate sustainable municipal development."

Ambassador Yao Wen affirmed that the bilateral partnership reached new milestones following the official visit to China by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, adding that China aims to deepen technological integration and people-to-people connectivity.

State Minister Mir Shahe Alam underscored that China's technical assistance in automated waste management and waste-to-power generation offers substantial systemic benefits, confirming that an official agreement is slated for signing during his scheduled visit to China this coming September.

Secretary of the Local Government Division Md. Shahidul Hasan, Managing Director of Dhaka WASA Md. Moniruzzaman, and senior ministry engineering officials attended the session.
