The government has launched an initiative to systematically install rooftop solar panels across all public offices under the Local Government Division and the Rural Development and Cooperatives Division to reduce operating power expenses and drive clean energy adoption. State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam outlined the roadmap during two separate policy sessions held at the ministry's conference room on Tuesday, 25 August 2026.

The State Minister stated that the solar energy deployment will expand progressively from central secretariats to district, upazila, municipal, and union-level administrative complexes. To optimize technical output, the project plans to integrate advanced net-metering and hybrid solar engineering systems, enabling public buildings to supply surplus electricity back to the national power grid while leveraging storage solutions for night-time operations.

He noted that the government plans to leverage private sector technical capacity by signing formal Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with leading engineering entities including Walton, PRAN-RFL, and Grameen Shakti. The nationwide initiative aligns with directives from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to institutionalize energy efficiency and green infrastructure across state institutions.
Following cabinet directives issued on 10 August and operational decisions from 17 August, two high-level committees led by additional secretaries have identified feasible rooftop surface areas, calculating structural costs and engineering constraints.

The sessions were attended by Secretary of the Local Government Division Md. Shahidul Hasan, Secretary of the Rural Development and Cooperatives Division Rafiqul E Mohamed, departmental heads, and technical delegates from Walton, PRAN-RFL, and Grameen Shakti.
