Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) hosted a day-long training programme titled "Basic Training Session on Pet and Stray Animals: Handling, Medicine and Nutrition" to strengthen knowledge and practical skills in veterinary care, responsible pet ownership and animal welfare.

Organised by Animal Saviours of Bangladesh (ASB) at Syed Nazrul Islam Auditorium, the programme held on 11 July, Saturday and  focused on safe animal handling, first aid, nutrition, rescue techniques and post-rescue care for pets and stray animals.

The chief guest was Professor Dr. Md. Bahanur Rahman, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Science and School of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry. BAU Proctor Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Alim attended as the guest of honour, while Professor Dr. Mahbubul Pratik Siddiqui, Assistant Proctor, joined as a special guest.

Special speaker A.N.M. Selim Hasan, Head of Marketing of the Animal Health Division at SKF Pharmaceuticals Limited, highlighted the importance of quality-driven veterinary healthcare. Regional Sales Manager Syed Mahfuz Ali, responsible for Mymensingh, Netrokona, Sherpur and Bhaluka regions, also attended the event.

ASB Vice-President Dr. Md. Al Faruk Mia said the organisation officially began its journey with a 101-member committee after two years of volunteer activities. Its primary mission is rescuing, treating and rehabilitating injured and neglected stray animals.

He also requested a dedicated room at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital for post-operative animal care and stressed the need for rescue equipment such as catchers and anti-bite gloves to ensure volunteer safety.

Speaking at the event, Syed Mahfuz Ali said SKF's guiding principle, "Excellence Through Quality," has helped the company become one of Bangladesh's leading animal health companies while supporting a sustainable and safe protein supply chain.

Professor Dr. Md. Bahanur Rahman emphasized that every animal's life is equally valuable and said veterinarians have both professional and ethical responsibilities to ensure animal welfare. He pledged institutional support for ASB's humanitarian initiatives.

ASB President Professor Dr. Md. Mahbub Alam said the organisation was founded in July 2016 after being inspired by organised animal rescue and welfare activities observed during a visit to Chennai, India.

The workshop featured four technical sessions covering animal handling, owner communication, pet nutrition, first aid, disease management and preventive veterinary healthcare. The sessions were conducted by Abdur Rahman Shakil, Shamsun Nahar Wanti, Indrani Aditya, Dr. Sandeep Saha and Dr. Al Faruk.

Participants said the programme enhanced their practical understanding of modern veterinary practices, responsible pet ownership and technology-supported animal rescue and welfare services while inspiring more young volunteers to engage in animal protection initiatives.
