Tariff Troubles Tameable: Adviser Assures Amid US Duties
Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, the Adviser on Science, Technology, and Economic Affairs, expressed confidence that the recently imposed tariffs by the Trump administration on Bangladeshi goods entering the United States would not be overly difficult to manage.
Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat on Sunday (April 6), the first working day after a nine-day Eid holiday, Dr. Ahmed addressed various economic matters, including the impact of U.S. trade policies.
He noted, "Prices were controlled during Eid, and people felt relief. The economic situation of the country is improving. Overall, people had a pleasant Eid. In March, we received $3 billion in remittances, which also boosted our reserves."
Addressing concerns over the U.S. trade decision, he stated, "However, the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on Bangladeshi products entering the United States will not be too difficult to manage. This new tariff policy of the Trump administration will not have a significant impact."
The former central bank governor further added, "The economic impact of these newly imposed tariffs can be handled. The government has already taken initiatives to negotiate with the U.S. administration. We are hopeful for a positive outcome."
Meanwhile, the Secretariat saw a slightly lower attendance of officials and employees on the first working day after Eid. Several parking spaces remained vacant, and the festive spirit of Eid lingered among staff members. As the day began, colleagues exchanged greetings and embraces. Full-scale administrative activity is expected to resume within the next couple of days.
