US Expands Embargo on Chinese Electronics

The United States has further tightened its scrutiny of Chinese electronics and technology by expanding import restrictions on a broader range of equipment manufactured by several Chinese companies. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) said the move is aimed at safeguarding the country's communications infrastructure and reducing national security risks.

The latest action significantly broadens an FCC ban first introduced in 2022. At that time, the United States prohibited the import of newly designed telecommunications and video surveillance equipment from five major Chinese technology firms, including Huawei and ZTE. The updated order now extends the restrictions to older and legacy products manufactured by those companies.

The expanded restrictions apply to equipment produced by:

Huawei

ZTE

Hytera

Hikvision

Dahua

Key Changes in the New Order

The 2022 ban only applied to products designed after the regulation came into effect later that year. Under the new order, however, older or legacy models from the same manufacturers will also be barred from entering the United States.

The expanded restrictions specifically target equipment used for government security, public safety, critical infrastructure surveillance, and other national security-related purposes. The new measures are scheduled to take effect in early July.

In a statement, the FCC said: “This action was essential to reduce risks to the United States' communications sector and protect national security.”

The commission also clarified that existing users will not be affected. Individuals and organizations already using such equipment may continue to do so, but no new imports or commercial distribution of the affected products will be permitted.

Continuing Crackdown on Chinese Technology

The United States has taken several major steps in recent months over concerns about China's technological influence and potential espionage activities.

In December, the country banned imports of all new models of Chinese-made drones.

In March, Washington prohibited the import of new Chinese consumer routers, which serve as the core networking devices connecting computers, smartphones, and smart devices to the internet.

In October, the FCC voted in favor of blocking approvals for new devices containing components from blacklisted Chinese companies.

Hikvision has challenged the restrictions, filing a lawsuit in a U.S. court last December. The company argues that the FCC exceeded its legal authority and imposed the measures without sufficient justification.

The FCC is also considering an additional measure that would further tighten restrictions. If approved, U.S. telecommunications carriers would no longer be allowed to interconnect with any Chinese telecommunications company. Such a move would effectively make it impossible for Chinese telecom firms to operate data centers within the United States.
