EC Plans to Provide NID Server Copies from Local Offices
Move aims to reduce citizens’ dependency on Dhaka through local access and online fee-based service delivery
The Election Commission (EC) is planning to decentralize the issuance of National Identity Card (NID) server copies to local-level offices in a move aimed at making services more accessible and reducing public suffering.
Officials concerned confirmed the development on Saturday (June 27).
At present, citizens often require NID server copies for various purposes, including opening bank accounts, land registration and other administrative services. However, such copies are currently issued only from the EC headquarters in Dhaka, forcing people from across the country to travel to the capital.
To address this inconvenience, the commission is considering allowing citizens to collect server copies directly from their respective local areas. Necessary authority and system access are expected to be extended to field-level offices as part of the initiative.
During the EC’s monthly coordination meeting in June, Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed instructed relevant officials to examine the feasibility of providing NID server copies through an online payment system. He also directed them to submit a proposal within seven working days.
According to the latest voter list update, Bangladesh currently has 128.32 million registered voters. Of them, 65.21 million are male, 63.10 million are female and 1,243 are registered as third gender voters.
Stakeholders believe the initiative, if implemented, would significantly improve accessibility, reduce travel costs and strengthen citizen-focused digital services across the country.
