Notion Navigates to AI, Shuts Down Mail Client

Popular productivity platform Notion has officially announced that it will discontinue its native email client service. Beginning September 22, Notion Mail will be completely shut down across all platforms, including web, mobile, and desktop.

To ensure users do not lose important messages or data during the transition, Notion has already published a detailed FAQ and migration guide. Most emails stored in Notion Mail will remain available in users' original Gmail inboxes. However, users are advised to manually export their drafts, scheduled emails, message snippets, and auto-label instructions (email filtering rules) before September 22.

Not Leaving Email, Embracing AI Agents

Although Notion is discontinuing its mail client, the company is not abandoning email services altogether. Instead, it is shifting its strategy toward more advanced and automated agentic AI technology for inbox management.

Explaining the strategic shift in a post on X, Notion stated: “Notion’s AI agents are becoming increasingly capable and effective. We've observed that users are delegating the majority of their email tasks to these AI agents. More than half of Notion Mail users now manage their emails entirely through AI agents without directly opening their inboxes. As a result, we're now focusing all of our efforts on building technology that enables AI agents to run your inbox.”

Notion integrated its email client into its ecosystem after acquiring encrypted email startup Skiff in 2024. Rather than competing as a conventional email application, the company is now prioritizing AI-powered tools that automatically organize emails, draft replies, and streamline inbox management.
