Lack of Employment Opportunities for Diploma Engineers May Increase Educated Unemployment: Hannan Masud
Member of Parliament Abdul Hannan Masud has called for greater employment opportunities for diploma engineers and a fair salary structure in the private sector, warning that expanding technical education without corresponding job creation may increase educated unemployment.
Member of Parliament Abdul Hannan Masud has said that increasing the number of diploma engineers without creating sufficient employment opportunities could further raise the number of educated unemployed people in Bangladesh.
He made the remarks at a press conference held at the central office of the National Citizen Party (NCP). The event was organized by the National Diploma Engineers Alliance (NDEA), a platform aligned with NCP, demanding a fair pay-scale structure for private-sector engineers and employees.
Speaking at the event, Masud emphasized the need for stronger alignment between education and labour market demand. According to him, although the number of diploma engineers continues to grow, employment opportunities—particularly in the public sector—remain limited.
He claimed that Bangladesh currently has around 2.7 million educated unemployed citizens and stressed that future expansion of higher education should be matched with employment planning and skills development.
Masud also argued that although the majority of employed people work in the private sector, compensation structures remain uneven compared with government employment, highlighting the need for a more balanced and structured wage framework.
He further said education reforms should focus not only on expanding institutions but also on improving quality, governance and workforce readiness.
The press conference also included his observations and criticism regarding broader economic and social policy issues.
