Bangladesh Marks 20 Years of First Submarine Cable Landing Station in Cox’s Bazar
Bangladesh’s first submarine cable landing station has completed 20 years of operation, with the country’s state-owned international bandwidth provider marking the milestone through a modest celebration in Cox’s Bazar.
Officials and employees of Bangladesh Submarine Cables PLC cut a cake on Saturday, May 23 at the company’s landing station office in Jhilonja, Cox’s Bazar, to celebrate the successful and profitable two-decade journey of the country’s first submarine cable connection.
At the same time, Managing Director Md Aslam Hossain joined a similar cake-cutting ceremony at the company’s head office in Dhaka. In Cox’s Bazar, the programme was led by the station’s chief officer and Deputy General Manager Engineer Md Tarikul Islam.
Speakers at the event recalled the historic moment of May 21, 2006, when former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia officially inaugurated the Cox’s Bazar landing station, connecting Bangladesh to the global information superhighway for the first time.
Engineer Md Tarikul Islam said the average lifespan of a submarine cable is usually considered around 25 years. However, the country’s first submarine cable, SEA-ME-WE-4, has continued to provide uninterrupted service even after completing two decades.
He said the cable remains operational due to world-class maintenance and proper lifecycle management. According to him, the cable has maintained service quality and is expected to continue uninterrupted operations until 2030.
Officials and engineers from different levels of the Cox’s Bazar landing station attended the programme.
