Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has emphasized the importance of “fact-checking” and “screening” processes to ensure citizens’ right to information.

He made the remarks on Sunday morning, 12 April, at an exchange meeting with core group members of the “Right to Information Forum” held in the meeting room of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting at the Secretariat. Speakers at the meeting presented various reform proposals, including digital security measures and technology-friendly initiatives, to enhance the effectiveness of the Right to Information Act. Assuring them, the minister said that all relevant stakeholders would be directly involved in the process of drafting the new law.

In his speech as the chief guest, the minister noted that alongside ensuring the free flow of information, it is equally important to protect the public by preventing the spread of misinformation and disinformation.

During the meeting, the minister stated that there are specific reasons behind keeping the amendment ordinance of the Right to Information Act on hold. He said that while the free flow of information has increased, it has also led to a rise in the spread of false information. Therefore, along with ensuring access to information, responsible use must be given due importance. Emphasizing the principle of “More Information, More Truth,” he said that an effective law would be formulated based on the opinions and recommendations of experienced stakeholders. In this regard, he placed special importance on preserving the institutional character of the Information Commission and strengthening “fact-checking” and “screening” processes through the integration of modern technology.

State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yaser Khan Chowdhury was present as a special guest at the meeting. Among others, TIB Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, SUJAN Secretary Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar, Information Secretary Mahbuba Farzana, and MRDI Executive Director Hasibur Rahman also spoke at the event.
