Server Room Fire Disrupts International Flights at Sylhet Osmani International Airport
International flight immigration operations at Sylhet Osmani International Airport have been temporarily suspended following a fire in the airport’s server room.
The incident was reported to the Sylhet Fire Station control room at 11:35 pm on Sunday, 5 April. Two fire units immediately responded to the scene and brought the fire under control by 12:05 am.
The Sylhet Fire Station control room confirmed that the fire broke out on the second floor server room of Sylhet Osmani International Airport. Initial reports indicate that the cause of the fire and the extent of damages are yet unknown. No casualties have been reported in connection with the fire.
Earlier on the same day, Afroza Khanam Rita, Minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism, conducted an unannounced inspection of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to oversee overall operations. Minister Rita stated that under the new democratic government, cargo transport operations would be fully free from harassment, and a strict “zero tolerance” policy would be enforced against all forms of corruption. She emphasized the need to enhance service quality across various airport facilities.
Subsequently, Minister Rita visited Biman Bangladesh Airlines’ hangar complex to review the technical status of flight BG202. She inquired in detail about ongoing issues and instructed relevant engineers and officials to promptly complete the central hydraulic system maintenance to make the aircraft airworthy again. During the inspection, she also checked the cabin and cockpit, observing the functionality of various instruments and panels.
The inspection was attended by Air Vice Marshal Md. Mostofa Mahmud Siddiq, Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), along with senior officials from CAAB and Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
It is noted that flight BG202 had been grounded at Sylhet Osmani International Airport due to a technical fault in the isolator of the central hydraulic system. Maintenance work is currently underway to restore the aircraft to operational condition.
