The Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) has expressed profound sorrow at the passing of Begum Khaleda Zia, Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), three-time former Prime Minister, and a leading symbol of Bangladesh’s democratic movement.

Begum Khaleda Zia passed away on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.

A towering figure in national politics, Begum Khaleda Zia was Bangladesh’s first elected female Prime Minister and the second woman head of government in the Muslim world. Her contributions to restoring parliamentary democracy, leading anti-autocracy movements, promoting women’s education, and advancing women’s empowerment remain unparalleled in the country’s political history.

In a condolence message, Abul Khayer Mohammad Hafizullah Khan, Administrator of BASIS and Joint Secretary of the Local Government Division, said the nation has lost a courageous guardian. He noted that Begum Khaleda Zia stood unwaveringly for democracy during times of crisis and never compromised on human rights and dignity. Her leadership, sacrifice, and lifelong struggle, he said, would remain etched not only in political history but also in the hearts of millions. He added that her fearless and uncompromising leadership would continue to inspire future generations, and that the void left by her passing can never truly be filled.

BASIS prayed for the eternal peace and forgiveness of the departed soul and extended its deepest condolences to her bereaved family members, relatives, and admirers.
