Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) hosted a scientific seminar focusing on Radioactive Waste Management, Environmental Remediation, Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Practices, highlighting the growing importance of sustainable and technology-driven waste management. The seminar was organised by the Department of Chemistry and held on Monday, December 15, at the Video Conference Room of the Pre-Engineering Building on the CUET campus.

The keynote papers were presented by Professor Dr Ismail Rahman of the Institute of Environmental Radioactivity (IER), Fukushima University, Japan, and Dr Shafikur Rahman, a post-doctoral researcher at Kanazawa University, Japan. Their presentations shed light on advanced scientific approaches to managing radioactive waste, restoring contaminated environments, recovering valuable resources from waste and adopting circular economy models for long-term sustainability.

Vice-Chancellor of CUET, Professor Dr Mahmud Abdul Matin Bhuiya, attended the seminar as the chief guest. In his address, he said that in today’s global reality, waste can no longer be viewed merely as a by-product or burden. “Waste has now emerged as a promising resource. Through proper processing, waste can be transformed into assets, energy and effective tools for sustainable development,” he noted. Emphasising the role of universities, he added that technology-based institutions like CUET have a responsibility to generate knowledge, link research with real-world problem-solving and provide evidence-based guidance for policymaking. He expressed confidence that CUET’s research would not remain confined to academic papers but would contribute meaningfully to national policies, industrial applications and future research directions.

The seminar was also attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, Professor Dr A H Rashedul Hossain, as a special guest.

Chaired by the Head of the Department of Chemistry, Dr Mosammat Roksana Khatun, the programme began with a welcome address delivered by Associate Professor Dr Shashwata Ravi of the Department of Chemistry. The session was moderated by Associate Professor Dr Ratul Kumar Shil from the same department.

Later in the afternoon, CUET organised a separate workshop on Teaching, Learning and Assessment at the Academic Council Room. The keynote presentation was delivered by Professor Dr Arshad Mahmud Chowdhury, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of BRAC University. The workshop was chaired by Professor Dr Md Abdur Rahman Bhuiya, Director of CUET’s Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC).

The event opened with a welcome speech by Professor Dr Md Sanaul Rabbi, Additional Director of the IQAC, while the session was conducted by Md Imran Hossain, Section Officer of the IQAC. The workshop focused on enhancing academic quality through effective teaching methodologies, learning strategies and assessment practices, reinforcing CUET’s commitment to excellence in higher education.
