International payment gateway PayPal, widely used by freelancers, online businesses, and for international transactions in over 200 countries, is now set to begin operations in Bangladesh, according to the country’s central bank.

Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur stated that PayPal is interested in launching its services locally. This move will enable small entrepreneurs and freelancers to connect easily with international markets.

“PayPal is keen to operate in Bangladesh. Currently, opening LCs for small-scale exports is challenging for small entrepreneurs. With the launch of a platform like PayPal, they will be able to send products to Europe, America, and other parts of the world with ease, and receive payments quickly,” the Governor said.

He added that the lack of international payment gateways has often created difficulties for freelancers and outsourcing professionals in receiving payments from abroad. Many face delays or fail to receive their due compensation. The introduction of PayPal will address this problem.

Governor Mansur shared this information while speaking as the chief guest at the ‘Agro Award 2025’ event held on Tuesday, December 2, at InterContinental Dhaka, organized by Standard Chartered Bank and Channel i.

At the event, eight individuals and three institutions were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the agriculture sector, selected from over 500 applications.
