The three-day 47th National Science and Technology Week officially commenced on Saturday at the National Science Complex in Agargaon, Dhaka, with a colorful inauguration ceremony that celebrated scientific excellence and inspired the country's young innovators.

The event began with the presentation of national honors to three distinguished scientists. The festival features a wide range of activities, including a Science Olympiad, science quiz competitions, science shows, and innovative project exhibitions designed to encourage scientific curiosity and innovation among students.

Addressing the young participants at the opening ceremony, Minister for Science and Technology and Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, Faqir Mahbub Anam, urged aspiring scientists not to fear failure and to pursue their goals with determination and courage.

Referring to the limitless opportunities available to the younger generation, the minister said, “Sky is the limit for you. Dream big and set your goals. Never lose patience. Never give up under any circumstances. Keep working persistently, and success will surely come.”

He added that any goal can be achieved through proper planning and perseverance, citing Bangladesh’s growing technological capabilities as an example. “Our own young people are now operating the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant,” he noted.

The inaugural session was chaired by Anwar Hossain, Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology. Also present was Dr. Md. Moniruzzaman (Lieutenant General), Director General of the National Museum of Science and Technology.

Speaking at the event, Secretary Anwar Hossain called upon parents to create an environment where children can freely ask questions and explore their curiosity.

“Science is the pathway to finding answers,” he said. “We have many laboratories available for young researchers, and we will provide them with opportunities to work and learn there.”

Among the honorees was nationally acclaimed scientist Dr. Muhammad Abbas Uddin, who emphasized the importance of perseverance and inquiry in scientific pursuits.

“Disappointment is a scientist’s constant companion. Frustration is your necklace,” he remarked. “Science begins with questions, and solving problems is the work of scientists. Therefore, questioning is the greatest power in the world.”

He encouraged young researchers to focus on addressing Bangladesh’s own challenges rather than blindly imitating Western scientific trends.

Another award-winning scientist, Marjana Akter, highlighted the role of curiosity in innovation.

“All solutions originate from questions,” she said. “Never lose your curiosity. Hold on to the questions that naturally arise in your mind from childhood and think beyond whatever is trending on social media.”

The organizers noted that Dr. Tahmeed Ahmed, Executive Director of icddr,b and one of the recipients of the national honor, was unable to attend the ceremony in person due to being abroad and therefore could not receive the award directly.

The 47th National Science and Technology Week is expected to bring together young scientists, innovators, educators, policymakers, and science enthusiasts from across the country, providing a platform for showcasing creativity, technological solutions, and scientific excellence.
