Decentralized social media platform BlueSky announced on Friday that its user base has surpassed 40 million. Simultaneously, the company revealed plans to launch a new experimental “Dislike” feature, aimed at helping users further personalize their feeds according to their preferences, reports TechCrunch.

BlueSky stated that with this new feature, the system will analyze posts that users dislike and learn to reduce similar content in their feed. This adjustment will also influence the ranking of replies, not just the main feed.

In addition, the platform has introduced several conversation control enhancements, including improved detection of inappropriate comments, a redesigned reply button, and prioritization of posts from communities closely related to the user, referred to as the “social neighborhood.”

“These changes will help create a more ‘fun, genuine, and respectful discussion environment,’” BlueSky said, noting that the updates follow some user dissatisfaction regarding the platform’s content moderation policies.

Currently, BlueSky provides users with various control features, such as moderation lists, content filters, muted words, and the ability to subscribe to other moderation services. Users can also isolate quote posts to avoid unwanted attention.

The company added that it is testing updates to design, ranking algorithms, and reaction analysis systems to more effectively detect and demote unwanted comments and spam posts.

According to the new update, pressing the “Reply” button will now allow users to view the entire thread instead of being taken directly to the writing screen—reducing hasty comments made without full context.

BlueSky believes these changes will both elevate the quality of conversations and provide users with a more controlled, relevant, and friendly social media experience.
