After three and a half decades, Islami Chhatra Shibir has achieved a sweeping victory in the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) election, leaving the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (BNP’s student wing) trailing far behind. Out of 26 positions, Shibir-backed candidates from the Shompritir Shikkharthi Jote panel have won 24, including the top posts of Vice-President (VP) and General Secretary (GS).

With this landslide, Jamaat-e-Islami’s student organization has continued its dominance in central student union elections, following its exclusive triumphs in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) and Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) elections. However, Chhatra Dal broke its dry spell by winning a single post—its first since failing to secure any seat in the DUCSU and JUCSU polls.

Among the key editor posts beyond the top two, Mahbubur Rahman from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering was elected as the Secretary for Science and Information Technology. He received 6,128 votes, defeating 11 rivals. Tanvir Anjum Shovon from the Department of Human Resource Management was elected Secretary for Research and Innovation with 5,622 votes, while Mehedi Hasan Sohan from the Department of Zoology won the Career Development and International Affairs Secretary post with 4,987 votes—all representing the Shompritir Shikkharthi Jote panel.

For the top positions, Shompritir Shikkharthi Jote candidate Ibrahim Hossain Rony secured 7,983 votes to become VP, while Saeed Bin Habib won the GS post with 8,031 votes. Their closest rivals from Chhatra Dal—VP candidate Sajjad Hossain Hridoy and GS candidate Shafayat Hossain—managed 4,374 and 2,724 votes respectively.

Shibir failed to secure only two posts: Assistant General Secretary (AGS) and Assistant Sports Secretary. Chhatra Dal’s Aiyubur Rahman Tawfiq won the AGS post with 7,014 votes, defeating Shibir’s Sajjat Hossain Munna, who received 5,045 votes. Tamanna Mahfuz Smriti from the Binirman Shikkharthi Oikya panel won the Assistant Sports and Games Secretary position.

The voting was conducted through ballot papers, and counting was completed using the Optical Mark Reader (OMR) system. The central results were announced at the Faculty of Business Administration auditorium, while hall-level results were declared directly at the polling centers. The final results for the central union were officially announced around 4:30 am on Thursday, 15 October.

To ensure a fair and transparent election, faculty deans served as returning officers, while departmental chairpersons acted as presiding officers. Voter lists included photographs for identification purposes.
