46th National Science and Technology Week: Suburban Students and Girls Lead the Competition!

The 46th National Science & Technology Week concluded in colourful fashion at the National Science & Technology Complex in Agargaon, Dhaka. Organised by the National Museum of Science and Technology, the three‑day event featured an exhibition of students’ innovative projects, a Science Olympiad, a quiz, science drama and live science shows. Visitors from across the country explored 180 selected projects displayed in the fair.

On the final day, Friday, 20 June, prizes were awarded to 24 students in the senior, junior and special categories of project exhibition, nine winners in the science‑based quiz, and ten in the Science Olympiad. A review of the results shows that almost all the winners came from outside Dhaka, with female contestants collectively outperforming their male peers.

In the junior Olympiad group, Khan Rafiul Islam Leon of Khulna Zilla School secured first place, followed by Shumaiya Tasnim Titli of Faridpur Government Girls’ High School and Rafin Ahmed of Shariatpur’s Palong Tulasar Gurudas Government High School. Nabil Hasan of Pabna Zilla School and Rajin Shahriar of Cumilla Zilla School finished fourth and fifth respectively.

In the senior group, Taslima Tasnim Lamia of Cumilla Victoria Government College ranked first, Raeesa Fabiha Jannat of Chattogram Cantonment Public College second and Meherin Naznin Popi of Chandpur’s Lauta­lee Dr Rashid Ahmed Higher Secondary School & College third. Mohammad Sakibur Hasan of Bogura Government Azizul Haque College and Abdullah Al Sajid of Nawabganj Government College, Chapainawabganj, placed fourth and fifth.

The quiz competition was won by Arnisha Sarkar Senjuti, Porna Chakraborty and Faiza Zarin of Netrokona Government Girls’ High School. The team from Hajiganj Government Model Pilot High School & College, Chandpur, took second place, while Khan Rafiul Islam Leon, S M Tawhid Reza Asib and Arnab Saha of Khulna Zilla School finished third.

Eight projects received awards in the junior exhibition category. First prize went to Sheikh Samiul Alam Taj of Jahanabad English School, Khulna, for his voice‑commanded “Smart Home Automation” project. Second place was awarded to “Safe Guard for Driving” by Md. Abdus Siam and Md. Nafis Mahfuz of Horimohan Government High School, Chapainawabganj, while a “Renewable City” concept from Pirojpur claimed third.

In the senior category, “FABSat 2.0” by Mohammad Abdullah Al Titu and Sheikh Al Amin of Government Anandamohan College, Mymensingh, ranked first. “Smart Fertilising” by Abdullah Al Zobayer and Jahin Abdullah Diganta of Ahmed Uddin School & College, Gaibandha, secured second, and Md. Imtiaz Ahmed Nahid of Gazipur Cantonment Public School’s “Madhyam” project came third.

Among club entries, Narsingdi Science and Robotics Club’s missile‑system military drone topped the list, led by adviser Amirul Islam and CEO Rafi Hossain. Junaid Aziz Faruqui’s CNC Drawing Machine for Icon IT Solution won second prize, while Boson Science Club’s “Improved Beetroot Powder,” presented by Jannatul Ferdous Sagar, placed third.

More than 700 contestants, having qualified through district competitions in all 64 districts, took part in the national finals over three days, turning the complex into a hub for students, young scientists, innovators, teachers and guardians.

At the closing and prize‑giving ceremony, Senior Secretary to the Ministry of Science and Technology, Md. Mokabbir Hossain, observed, “The foundations of modern civilisation lie in science and technology. Our students are now more confident than ever. Harnessing that confidence and creativity, they will one day lead Bangladesh onto the world stage of scientific advancement. The ministry stands ready to provide every support they need.

Additional Secretary Abu Said Md. Kamruzzaman presided over the event.

Reflecting on the week’s activities, Dr Md. Moniruzzaman, Director of the National Museum of Science and Technology, noted: “Since its founding on 26 April 1967, the museum has expanded its reach nationwide. Each year, at upazila, district and divisional levels, we arrange science fairs, Olympiads, quizzes and seminars, fostering scientific culture across Bangladesh.
