China has announced its intention to expand the global use of the digital yuan, aiming to reduce reliance on the U.S. dollar in international trade and finance. Speaking at the Lujiazui Forum in Shanghai on Wednesday, Governor Pan Gongsheng of the People’s Bank of China declared the establishment of an international digital yuan operations center in the city.

He emphasized the need to move away from dependence on a single currency in the global economy and called for building a “multi-currency-based international financial system.” His remarks, as reported by Reuters, come amid rising international interest in alternative currencies due to U.S. tariff policies.

The report noted that China has already been promoting the use of the yuan in partner countries, including Russia. On the same day, six foreign banks signed agreements to join China’s Cross-Border Interbank Payment System (CIPS), a network designed to facilitate international yuan transactions.

China's financial regulators also reiterated their commitment to maintaining the stability of the yuan’s exchange rate and managing risks in the foreign exchange market. Authorities further indicated that the country’s financial sector would continue to open up to foreign investors, reinforcing China's broader ambition to internationalize its currency.
