Microsoft Tests Modern Redesign of Windows 11 Run Command Window
Microsoft has begun testing a modern redesign of the Run command window in Windows 11—launched by pressing Win + R—marking the first major visual update to the feature since its introduction in Windows 95. After more than three decades of remaining almost unchanged, the Run box is finally getting a fresh look, according to a report from PC World.
The updated Run window adopts Microsoft’s Fluent design language, featuring rounded corners, subtle shadow effects, and full dark-mode support. The result is a cleaner, sleeker, and more contemporary experience for users. During the testing phase, Microsoft is also allowing users to revert to the classic version if they prefer. The option will be available under Advanced System Settings.
The redesign drew attention after Windows preview leakers spotted it, with “PhantomOfEarth” being one of the first to share hints of the new visuals. The Run command codebase is nearly 30 years old, and users have long awaited a modern refresh of the interface.
However, Microsoft has not yet announced when the redesigned Run window will roll out permanently to all Windows 11 users.
