OpenAI’s ChatGPT is rapidly gaining popularity in India, but analysts say the company is still trailing in terms of revenue generation from the country, according to a report by TechCrunch.

Data from analytics firm Sensor Tower reveals that since 2023, ChatGPT has generated nearly $8 million in mobile app subscription revenue in India. In contrast, the figure stands at over $330 million in the United States, highlighting a significant gap.

The primary reason, analysts suggest, is local pricing. In India, ChatGPT’s base subscription cost is $20 (approximately ₹1,700)—a price considered steep for many users.

Nevertheless, Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s Chief Operating Officer, posted on X stating that “India is currently ChatGPT’s fastest-growing market.”

With more than 950 million internet users, India could play a pivotal role in OpenAI’s ambition to become a “billion-user platform.” Reports also suggest that the company is exploring a partnership with Indian telecom giant Reliance Jio to further expand its reach.

According to Appfigures, 20% of all ChatGPT Android app downloads in 2025 so far have originated from India. Globally, ChatGPT now boasts over 500 million weekly users.
