High Court Upholds Death Sentences in Abrar Fahad Murder Case

The High Court has delivered its verdict on the death reference, jail appeals, and appeals filed by the defendants in the Abrar Fahad murder case, upholding the death sentence for 20 convicts and life imprisonment for five others.

The verdict was announced on Sunday, March 16, by a High Court bench comprising Justice A.K.M. Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayetur Rahman.

Expressing satisfaction with the verdict, Abrar Fahad’s father, Barkat Ullah, stated, “I am satisfied with the High Court’s verdict. Now, I want to see the swift execution of the judgment after all legal procedures are completed.”

During the ruling, Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman, Deputy Attorney General K.B. Rumi, Zahirul Islam Sumon, Noor Mohammad Azmi, and Assistant Attorney General Barrister Sumaiya Aziz were present on behalf of the state. Defendants were represented by Masud Hasan Chowdhury and Azizur Rahman Dulu. Members of Abrar Fahad’s family were also present in the courtroom.

Convicts Sentenced to Death

The 20 individuals sentenced to death include several leaders and members of the recently banned student wing of Bangladesh Awami League-- Bangladesh Chhatra League of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) branch:

  2. Mehedi Hasan Robin (Organizing Secretary, Chemical Engineering, 15th batch)
  3. Anik Sarkar Apu (Information & Research Secretary, Mechanical Engineering, 15th batch)
  4. Moniruzzaman Monir (Literary Secretary, Water Resources Engineering, 16th batch)
  5. Meftahul Islam Jion (Sports Secretary, Marine Engineering, 15th batch)
  6. Ifti Mosharraf Sokal (Deputy Social Welfare Secretary, Biomedical Engineering, 16th batch)
  7. Muntasir Al Zemi (Member, MI Department)
  8. Mojahidur Rahman (EEE, 16th batch)
  9. Hossain Mohammad Toha (ME, 17th batch)
  10. Ehteshamul Rabbi Tanim (CE, 17th batch)
  11. Shamim Billah (Marine Engineering, 17th batch)
  12. Majedur Rahman Majed (MME, 17th batch)
  13. Khandakar Tabakkarul Islam Tanvir (Mechanical, 17th batch)
  14. Muhammad Morshed-Uz-Zaman Mondal Jisan (EEE, 16th batch)
  15. S.M. Nazmus Sadat (ME, 17th batch)
  16. Morshed Amartya Islam (ME, 17th batch)
  17. Mizanur Rahman (Water Resources, 16th batch)
  18. Shamsul Arefin Rafat (Mechanical Engineering)
  19. Mujtaba Rafid (Deputy Office Secretary, Chemical Engineering)

Convicts Sentenced to Life Imprisonment

The five individuals sentenced to life imprisonment are:

  1. Muhtasim Fuad (Vice President, BUET Chhatra League, CE, 14th batch)
  2. Ishtiaq Ahmed Munna (Publication Secretary, Mechanical, 3rd year)
  3. Amit Saha (Legal Affairs Sub-Secretary, Civil Engineering)
  4. Akash Hossain (CE, 16th batch)
  5. Moaaz Abu Huraira (CSE, 17th batch)

The High Court began reading the verdict at 11:00 AM, with Justice A.K.M. Asaduzzaman delivering the ruling. The hearing on death reference and appeals of the death row convicts concluded on February 24, having started on February 10.

In October of last year, Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman initiated an expedited hearing on the death reference and appeals of the convicted individuals.
