Government Approves Renaming of BSMMU

The government has decided to rename Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) as "Bangladesh Medical University." To implement this change, the Advisory Council has granted both policy and final approval to the draft of the "Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025."

The decision was made during a meeting of the Advisory Council held on Thursday, March 13, at the Chief Advisor's Office in Tejgaon. At the meeting, final approval was also granted for the renaming of Sheikh Hasina Medical University in Khulna and Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Medical University in Sylhet.

According to the Cabinet Division, the Advisory Council gave final approval to the draft ordinance, subject to vetting by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division. As a result, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University will be renamed "Bangladesh Medical University."

Additionally, the draft of the "Sheikh Hasina Medical University, Khulna (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025" has been approved, which will change its name to "Khulna Medical University." Similarly, with the final approval of the "Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Medical University, Sylhet (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025," the university will be renamed "Sylhet Medical University."
