The first and second units of Bangladesh’s Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant have completed installation of the automated process control system (APCS). Meanwhile, the Operator Information Support System (OISS) is being implemented for the first time at a nuclear power plant built by Rosatom outside Russia. Powered by digital twin technology, the system is designed to support safe and efficient plant operations, identify potential deviations and help operators make timely decisions during emergencies.

The information was disclosed in a press release sent by the media wing of Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom on Tuesday, October 13.

According to the release, the automated control system supplied by Rosatom’s Automated Control Systems division, RASU, comprises nearly 20,000 devices across 43 systems. These devices will monitor more than 7,000 parameters related to different plant processes, including reactor stability. The system is expected to improve operational safety, reliability and efficiency.

The Operator Information Support System is one of the key components of the broader control arrangement. RASU developed the system using digital twin technology for the power units. It has already been integrated into the first unit and is contributing to startup activities. The same technology will also be implemented at the second unit.

OISS can analyse data from 360 process-related systems to identify potential deviations. It also uses more than 80 guidelines to advise operators on appropriate actions during emergencies. By presenting complex operational information in an accessible format, the system is intended to help control-room personnel make faster, evidence-based decisions and respond more effectively to changing situations.

Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev said, “The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is not only one of the largest cooperation projects between Russia and Bangladesh, but also a pioneering project in the use of modern automation and control technologies. This is the first time that the Operator Information Support System is being implemented at a nuclear power plant built by Rosatom abroad.”

He added that the system would reduce emergency response times and operating costs while serving as a reliable support tool for control-room personnel.

The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is being built with two Generation III+ VVER-1200 reactors. Atomstroyexport, the engineering division of Rosatom, is implementing the construction project.
