Hasnat Abdullah, a member of parliament for Cumilla-4 and chief organiser of the National Citizen Party’s (NCP) southern region, has sharply criticised the vice-chancellor of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), calling him a “goonda”. Hasnat claimed that neither students nor teachers wanted the vice-chancellor and alleged that he had been conducting university activities online from a circuit house for an extended period.

He made the remarks on Monday afternoon while speaking as the chief guest at a reception for GPA-5 achievers organised by Narayanganj Chhatra Shakti at the auditorium of the Narayanganj District Shilpakala Academy. More than 500 students were honoured at the event.

Referring to the CUET vice-chancellor, Hasnat alleged that several Chhatra Dal members had been used to forcefully take control of the office. He also accused those involved of wanting to take the country backwards and said people should unite to resist such actions.

An anti-vice-chancellor movement is ongoing at CUET. According to the supplied report, the vice-chancellor broke the lock and entered his office to resume work on Monday. Students subsequently locked the office from outside, the report said.

Other speakers at the event included Abdullah Al Amin, MP for Narayanganj-4; Shawkat Ali, NCP central organiser and convener of its metropolitan unit; Tahmid Al Mudassir Chowdhury, central general secretary of Chhatra Shakti; Zubayer Sardar, convener of the NCP’s district unit; and Aminul Islam, convener of the metropolitan Chhatra Shakti unit.
