Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) has held a freshers’ reception and farewell ceremony for students of its Department of Chemistry, highlighting the importance of adapting to university life, developing positive attitudes and building respectful relationships between senior and junior students.
The programme was organised by the department at the Professor Mohammad Sharif Hossain Gallery in the university’s National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam Academic Building at 3pm on Monday, October 12, 2026. New students were welcomed with flowers, while departing students received flowers and crests in recognition of their transition from university life.
The event was attended by JUST Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Sheikh Mahmudul Hasan and Treasurer Professor Dr Mohammad Faruk Hasan as special guests.
Addressing the freshers, Professor Mahmudul Hasan said students needed to adapt to the university’s new environment and culture while using their judgement and intellectual abilities appropriately.
He also stressed the importance of healthy relationships between senior and junior students, saying that an atmosphere of fear or ragging was unacceptable.
Professor Dr Mohammad Faruk Hasan said universities were centres of knowledge and enlightenment. Students should embrace positive qualities and use their university experience to develop themselves, he added.
He emphasised that university education should not be limited to earning an academic degree. Genuine education, he said, should bring positive changes in people’s behaviour and outlook. He also called for stronger bonds of mutual affection, respect and goodwill between senior and junior students.
The programme was chaired by Department of Chemistry Chairman Dr K. M. Anis-ul-Haque. Professor Dr Md Hafiz Uddin, dean of the university’s Faculty of Science, also addressed the event as a special guest.
Associate Professors Dr Md Korban Ali and Dr Sumon Chandra Mohanta, along with other faculty members and students of the department, attended the programme.
The formal event was followed by a cultural programme featuring performances by students of the Department of Chemistry in the evening.
