Starlink Set to Enter Mobile Network Market as a Full-Fledged Operator
After revolutionising satellite-based internet services, Elon Musk’s space exploration company, SpaceX, is now preparing to enter the market as a full-fledged mobile network operator.
The company has successfully acquired up to 14 MHz of paired spectrum in the nationwide 800 MHz band from Grain Management in the US telecommunications market.
According to Elon Musk, acquiring this spectrum was the final and most important strategic step towards ensuring seamless and comprehensive mobile phone coverage across the United States.
As a result, ordinary users will be able to benefit from Starlink’s satellite network both indoors and outdoors.
Integration of Technologies and Network Architecture
Under the new plan, Starlink will use its satellite network to provide mobile phone coverage in open areas and outdoors. The recently acquired 800 MHz spectrum will be used to maintain network connectivity indoors. This frequency band is supported by almost all smartphones currently available on the market.
In addition, Starlink Mobile will utilise its previously acquired global 2 GHz mid-band spectrum to deliver high-speed internet and greater network capacity.
The company plans to provide 5G mobile services by combining satellite connectivity with ground-based femtocells.
Once the necessary government approvals are secured, SpaceX intends to introduce a powerful combination of satellite technology and advanced terrestrial infrastructure to users worldwide.
Intense Competition in the Telecommunications Market and Future Challenges
With the launch of this new mobile service, Starlink is poised to become a direct competitor to traditional US telecommunications giants such as AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile.
The company is particularly promising significantly better coverage than conventional operators in rural areas and communities where reliable internet access and mobile network services remain limited.
To support this ambitious undertaking, SpaceX has already received approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to launch 15,000 next-generation satellites into space.
The spectrum agreement, involving T-Mobile and subsequently Grain Management, is expected to mark the beginning of a new era in the US telecommunications industry.
