Apple has introduced a new feature called “Digital ID,” allowing iPhone and Apple Watch users to store their U.S. passports on their devices and use them at airport security checkpoints. Initially, this feature will be available at more than 250 airports, according to TechCrunch.

The Digital ID feature is part of iOS 26 and allows users to add various government-issued identification documents to the Apple Wallet in addition to passports. Users can scan their passport and complete facial verification through the device’s camera to securely store their ID.

However, Apple clarified that the Digital ID is not yet valid for international travel and cannot serve as a substitute for a physical passport. Currently, the feature is being piloted in select U.S. states.

Apple stated that in the future, the Digital ID could be used to verify age and confirm identity across various online and offline services. To protect user privacy, the company emphasized, “They will not store information on when or where the ID was used.”
