First anniversary meeting held
ICCES Calls for Collective Climate Action
- ICCES urges greater public awareness and participation in climate action
- Speakers stress maintenance and oversight of tree-planting and canal excavation programmes
- The organisation plans to celebrate its first anniversary in December
The Institute of Climate Change, Environment and Sustainability (ICCES) has called for collective action to address climate change, protect the environment and build a greener Bangladesh. Members stressed that environmental sustainability requires climate-conscious development planning, greater public awareness, and effective monitoring of government programmes.
The call came at a meeting marking the organisation’s first anniversary, held 0n 9 August, Fraiday at a restaurant in Agargaon, Dhaka. Chaired by ICCES Chairman Engineer Sheikh Tajul Islam Tuhin, the meeting reviewed the organisation’s achievements over the past year and discussed its plans and strategies for the coming year. Members also finalised plans for a larger anniversary celebration.
Speakers said the adverse effects of climate change are not confined to any single group but affect society as a whole. They emphasised that protecting the environment through greening initiatives is a shared responsibility and called for greater public awareness of climate-related challenges.
They also urged policymakers and development stakeholders to consider climate impacts at every stage, from green procurement to the planning and implementation of development projects. Incorporating environmental considerations into these processes, they said, is essential to promoting sustainable development and reducing adverse environmental effects.
The meeting also highlighted the need for effective implementation of the government’s announced programme to plant five crore trees, alongside canal excavation initiatives. Speakers stressed that planting trees and excavating canals alone would not guarantee lasting benefits. Regular maintenance, proper monitoring and sustained oversight are necessary to ensure these programmes achieve their intended objectives.
They called on the relevant authorities and responsible stakeholders to address implementation challenges and play a more effective role in ensuring the success of the initiatives.
ICCES informed the media that it will formally celebrate its first anniversary in December through a series of programmes marking the organisation’s anniversary date of October 8.
