Fostering a Future of Science: Advisor Stresses Financial Support and Donor Engagement
Emphasizing the importance of fostering a scientific mindset, Science and Technology Advisor Dr. Saleh Uddin Ahmed stated that the fundamental goal of science is to serve humanity. “To achieve this,” he said, “we must ensure financial support. There must be a connection between science and donor organizations.”
Dr. Ahmed made these remarks on Wednesday, June 18, while addressing the inauguration of National Science Fair 2025, held at the auditorium of the National Science and Technology Complex in Agargaon, Dhaka.
“We often say we must be science-minded and build a knowledge-based society. But the question remains—how much do we actually practice this?” he said. “Events like this fair will help encourage people toward that direction.”
He noted that not all research directly benefits people in an immediate sense, but it plays a supportive role. “Scientific studies must go through trials to become applicable. The role of scientists is to discover and innovate, and to refine existing knowledge.”
Dr. Ahmed further criticized the lack of private sector engagement in research in Bangladesh, despite the presence of large industrial firms. “Unfortunately, big industries in our country spend very little on research. They want to purchase innovation once it is complete, rather than fund the process. Scientists cannot move forward alone—without financial assistance, progress is impossible,” he said. “Unlike in developed countries where businesses fund major scientific research, in our country, businesses rarely provide incentives or financial support to scientists.”
The inauguration ceremony was presided over by Munira Sultana, Director General of the National Museum of Science and Technology. Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Mokabbir Hossain, attended as the special guest.
The three-day science fair, organized at the National Science and Technology Complex, will run from Wednesday through Friday (June 18–20). Following the inauguration, the advisor, special guests, and attending dignitaries toured various exhibition stalls.
