CXMT Starts LPDDR6 Production for Xiaomi Foldable
Chinese chipmaker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) has begun commercial production of its latest LPDDR6 DRAM memory chips. The advanced memory is set to be used in Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi’s flagship foldable smartphone, the ‘18 Fold,’ which is expected to hit the market in September.
CXMT and Xiaomi recently jointly confirmed the new agreement on social media platform Weibo. The development comes less than a year after CXMT began mass-producing its previous-generation LPDDR5 chips.
Technological Progress and Soaring Revenue
Designed for mobile devices, the LPDDR6 is CXMT’s most advanced dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) chip to date. The breakthrough has significantly narrowed the gap between the Chinese manufacturer and global memory-chip giants such as Samsung and SK Hynix.
Xiaomi has said its new foldable phone will feature its own 3-nanometer ‘Xring O3’ processor, which is directly compatible with the new memory technology.
CXMT has also reported a major financial breakthrough in its first half-year report since being listed on the stock market. Compared with the previous year, the company’s revenue surged by 874 percent to 150.3 billion yuan, or approximately $22.36 billion.
Legal Battle and International Challenges
The Hefei-based chipmaker has already begun sending samples of its new chips to customers for use in smartphones, servers and smart vehicles. However, alongside its commercial success, CXMT is facing a significant international challenge.
The U.S. Department of Defense, or Pentagon, has placed the company on a special blacklist over allegations that it supports China’s military. CXMT filed a lawsuit in a U.S. court last Friday challenging the Pentagon’s decision.
Although the Pentagon has declined to comment on the ongoing legal proceedings, CXMT has said it will continue its legal battle in an effort to strengthen its position in the global chip market.
