Emphasizing technological interventions, aquatic bioengineering, and sanctuary management to scale native fish production, Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) observed 'National Fisheries Week 2026' on Tuesday, 25 August. The Department of Fisheries and Marine Bioscience (FMB) organized day-long events under the theme "Self-reliant nation in silver fish, Bangladesh first of all".

The program commenced with a rally from the Kazi Nazrul Islam Academic Building, culminating near the university's research pond. Following the rally, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Yearul Kabir and Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Sheikh Mahmdul Hasan released high-quality fingerlings into the university's experimental research pond.

Addressing the discussion session as the chief guest, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Yearul Kabir stated, "Production of indigenous fish species has started to decline nationwide. Fisheries science students must apply modern breeding techniques and biotechnology to reverse this trend. Managing fish sanctuaries and conducting awareness campaigns for local fish farmers will not only meet national protein requirements but also expand high-value seafood exports. Modern technology must be integrated into safe aquaculture and native species conservation, including the preservation of Hilsa."

Speaking as the special guest, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Sheikh Mahmdul Hasan highlighted that technological modernization of fisheries is critical for safeguarding national nutritional security and driving blue economic growth.

Chairing the session, FMB Department Chairman Professor Dr. Md. Aminur Rahman expressed determination to leverage aquatic scientific resources to build a self-reliant and nutrition-secure nation.

FMB faculty members Professor Dr. Md. Anisur Rahman, Professor Dr. Md. Sirajul Islam, Professor Dr. Subrata Mondal, Professor Dr. Monjurul Haq, Professor Dr. Mir Mosharrof Hossain, alongside university officials and students, attended the event.
