Automated prosecution notices to hit violator's doorstep via post; DMP Chief outlines phased moves to control auto-rickshaws
AI Traffic Cameras at 19 Dhaka Crossings: 1,500 Cases Filed, 38,000 Summonses Issued!
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed announced that AI-based traffic cameras installed across 19 major intersections in the capital have registered 1,500 cases and issued 38,000 summonses so far. Speaking at the inauguration of a new AI camera system on Lake Road in the Tejgaon zone on Tuesday (June 30), the DMP chief emphasized that this technology is driving an unprecedented shift toward traffic discipline.
In a significant push towards digital traffic enforcement, AI-based traffic cameras have now been expanded to 19 key intersections in Dhaka, leading to 1,500 traffic cases and 38,000 ownership summonses to date.
DMP Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed shared these figures on Tuesday afternoon while responding to journalists at the inauguration ceremony of the newly deployed AI cameras on Lake Road, held at the Tejgaon Traffic DC office. Additional Commissioner of DMP Traffic Division Anisur Rahman and senior officials of Tejgaon division were present at the event.
The Commissioner stated that with the addition of four new points today, the automated system is now active in 19 intersections, up from the previous 15. The expansion to other major junctions is currently underway. Explaining the AI prosecution mechanism, he said, "When traffic violations are detected by the cameras, the prosecution notice is sent not only via mobile SMS but also delivered by post directly to the registered address of the vehicle owner. SMS notifications are dispatched from two dedicated DMP traffic numbers, and the records are simultaneously updated on the DMP Traffic website." He also noted instances where notices reached previous owners because the vehicle ownership transition was not officially updated after sale.
Regarding the newly installed camera on Lake Road, the DMP Commissioner detailed that the AI system will flawlessly and automatically detect speeding, dangerous lane changing, riding motorcycles without helmets, illegal parking, and creating traffic obstructions to file digital cases. This tech-driven enforcement has already initiated a visible improvement, fostering a positive habit among drivers to maintain lanes and respect signal lights.
Addressing public concern over battery-run auto-rickshaws on capital streets, the DMP chief affirmed that operations against unauthorized vehicles are ongoing. However, he admitted that removing all auto-rickshaws instantly is not feasible. The Ministry of Home Affairs and DMP have formulated a policy framework on this matter, and under a coordinated approach involving all stakeholders, legal measures will be executed in consecutive phases.
