Individual Arrested for Fake IDs, Including One in the Prime Minister's Wife's Name

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) City-Cyber Crime Investigation Department has arrested a man for fraud and spreading misleading information by creating artificial and fake profiles on social media. Utilizing technological surveillance and data analysis, law enforcement apprehended the accused, Kakan Rana (35), during a raid in Khilkhet, Dhaka, on Sunday afternoon, August 23, 2026. This information was confirmed to the media on Monday, August 24, by DMP Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Niaz Mehedi and the Prime Minister's Deputy Press Secretary Jahidul Islam Rony.

According to cyber investigators, the suspect systematically created and operated unauthorized Facebook accounts spoofing the identity, photographs, and designations of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s spouse, Additional Press Secretary Atiqur Rahman Rumon, and Personal Assistant-2 Abdur Rahman Sani. The suspect allegedly utilized these malicious profiles to disseminate engineered disinformation and damaging narratives targeting the individuals. Digital evidence indicates the creation of multiple other forged pages and user profiles.

Acting on filed formal complaints, the E-Fraud Investigation Team traced the suspect's internet footprint, communication vectors, and location metadata. During the operation, law enforcement personnel seized mobile communication devices and related electronic equipment for forensic extraction.

A case has been formally registered with the Banani Police Station under the Cyber Security Act. Police have forwarded the suspect to the competent court alongside a prayer for a seven-day custodial remand to facilitate in-depth digital forensic examination and identify underlying network accomplices.
