Government Committed to Implementing July Charter Commitments
Social Media Has Become an Arena for Political Conflict: Information Minister

3 August, Monday: Highlighting the current social media landscape, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon stated that alongside parliament, social media has become a primary arena for political conflict in recent times. He noted that instigating instability and polarizing trends instead of responsible behavior on these platforms is concerning, and conducting such activities in the name of ideology presents a further ominous sign.
He made these remarks as a special guest during a discussion meeting organized by the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) at the National Press Club on Monday, August 3, commemorating the second anniversary of the July Mass Uprising.
The Information Minister asserted, "If the public perceives that anyone is walking the path of spreading confusion, creating instability, or executing conspiracies of foreign forces, the government will fulfill its necessary duties in the interest of establishing good governance." He urged collective efforts to ensure transparency and good governance in state administration.
Underlining the significance of the July Charter, he added, "The signatures on the July Charter carry a bond with the blood of martyrs. The government is committed to fulfilling every pledge of that charter. Remembering martyrs must not remain confined to emotion or formality. Their sacrifices will truly be honored when parliament is made functional, political debates are integrated into democratic culture, and the political process becomes more institutionalized and accountable."
The discussion meeting was attended by Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the chief guest. Other notable attendees included State Minister for Information Yasser Khan Chowdhury, Principal Information Officer of Press Information Department Syed Abdal Ahmad, BFUJ General Secretary Quader Gani Chowdhury, National Press Club President Poet Hassan Hafiz, DUJ President Shahidul Islam, and General Secretary Khurshid Alam.
