Windows Win: Microsoft Quietly Extends Windows 10 Security Support to 2027

Despite continuously encouraging users of older computers to upgrade to Windows 11, Microsoft has quietly delivered welcome news for Windows 10 users. Without any formal announcement, the American technology giant has discreetly extended its Windows 10 Consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) program by an additional year.

Under the revised policy, Windows 10 users will now continue receiving official Microsoft security updates and patches until October 12, 2027. Previously, the program was scheduled to expire in October 2026.

Who Is Eligible and How It Works

The extension offers significant relief to owners of older desktops and laptops that do not meet Windows 11's minimum hardware requirements, such as TPM 2.0 support or compatible processors.

Users running Windows 10 version 22H2 in the Home, Professional, Pro Education, and Workstation editions are eligible to enroll in the program.

Those who have already joined the ESU program will not need to take any additional action. Their existing licenses will automatically remain valid until October 12, 2027.

Microsoft has also confirmed that a single Microsoft account can secure up to 10 devices under the extended security update license.

Free Enrollment Options for Consumers

Earlier, it was widely expected that consumers would need to pay an annual fee of US$30 for continued security updates. However, Microsoft has introduced several alternative methods that effectively allow most users to receive the updates free of charge.

Users can qualify by backing up and syncing their PC settings to a Microsoft account through Windows Backup. Alternatively, they can redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points to activate the coverage.

Users in the European Economic Area (EEA) will enjoy an even simpler process, as they can activate the extended security updates at no cost simply by signing into their Microsoft accounts.

Important Advisory

Microsoft has cautioned that users may enroll in the ESU program at any time before October 2027. However, devices will remain vulnerable to newly discovered viruses and malware until enrollment is completed. The company therefore recommends joining the program as soon as possible to maintain continuous protection.

According to Microsoft, the extension is intended to provide users with additional time to upgrade their hardware gradually or prepare for a future transition to Windows 11 without sacrificing security.
