621 Studentless Vocational Institutes Face Closure! Teachers Drawing Salaries for 'Ghost' Sessions
The Bangladesh Technical Education Board (BTEB) has issued show-cause notices to 621 SSC and Dakhil vocational institutions for failing to enroll students over a long period. Despite having zero students, the teachers and staff have been regularly drawing government salaries. In a strict move, the Bangladesh Technical Education Board (BTEB) issued a formal show-cause notice on June 24, 2026, signed by Md. Al Masud Karim, secretary and inspector (Addl. Charge). According to sub-clauses 4.2, 4.4, and 5.4 of the Non-Government Technical Educational Institution Establishment, Teaching and Recognition Policy-2024, these institutions have failed to meet standard criteria. They must explain by July 22, 2026, why their academic permits should not be canceled. According to sources, the government is paying salaries and benefits to teachers and staff every month, even in the absence of students. These institutions, lacking educational activities, are on the verge of closure. If these show-cause institutions fail to meet conditions—such as admissions, results, infrastructure, recruitment of teachers/staff, management committee, furniture, equipment, library, and other applicable terms imposed during the teaching permit approval—within the stipulated time, the board may cancel or revoke their teaching permits with government approval.
