Bangladesh Explores Earth Observation Satellite System for Disaster Management, Agriculture and Natural Resource Monitoring
Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL) has organized a seminar on the proposed Earth Observation Satellite System to explore the use of advanced technology in disaster management, agriculture, forest monitoring, land management and natural resource conservation.
The seminar titled “Bangladesh’s Proposed Earth Observation Satellite System” was held on Thursday (June 25) at Hotel Grand Palace in Dhaka, where experts discussed the potential applications and importance of the proposed satellite system across different sectors.
BSCL Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Imadur Rahman presented the keynote paper at the seminar. He said that the implementation of a modern Earth Observation Satellite System would enable regular monitoring of land, water resources, agriculture, forests and environmental changes across the country.
He said the satellite system would help make government decision-making more data-driven and effective. The technology could play a significant role in identifying flood-prone areas, monitoring water flow and reducing losses through early information-based responses.
Dr. Rahman added that the technology would also support agricultural monitoring, crop condition analysis, disease detection and identifying water shortages.
Speakers at the seminar said Earth Observation Satellite technology could improve monitoring of illegal activities in forests, river erosion, coastal changes, land surveys and urban planning.
Additional Secretary (Company) of the Posts and Telecommunications Division Md. Motasim Billah attended the event as the chief guest. He highlighted the importance of Earth Observation Satellite technology and provided necessary guidance on related issues.
Representatives from different ministries, government agencies and relevant sectors participated in the seminar. They shared their institutional requirements and possible applications while providing suggestions for making the proposed satellite system more effective.
Technical presentation was delivered by BSCL Assistant General Manager S.M. Anwarul Aziz. BSCL General Manager (Administration and Procurement) Md. Golam Sarwar and General Manager (Sales and Marketing) Shah Ahmedul Kabir participated in the panel discussion. Manager Touhidul Islam moderated the session.
BSCL believes that the implementation of an Earth Observation Satellite System will create new opportunities for disaster response, agricultural development, environmental protection and sustainable planning in Bangladesh.
